The 2 away wins were achieved by the pairings of Paul Connolly with Gerry Carty, and Conor Hamill with Brian Furey. Best of luck to Lewis and all the team in the next round.

Update 5th July

PRESIDENTS PRIZE - Men's President Padraic O’Connell's prize will be held next  Sunday the 11th of July. We hope that Padraic has better luck weather-wise with his President’s than his Captain’s Prize when play had to be abandoned due to torrential rain and postponed to the following Sunday. Hopefully lightning doesn’t strike twice (literally).

The competition will be in the time-honoured format of an 18 hole Stroke followed by a 9 hole playoff.

The current Covid restrictions mean that there will be some differences from our usual Presidents Day. There will be no food on the day, alcohol can be consumed outside only. It is hoped to hold the presentation outside on the putting green if weather permits, if not, it will be deferred to the following Sunday.

FIXTURES - Sunday the 18th of July is the date for this year's Bart Moran Cup for the men and the Niamh Nangle Cup for the women.

RESULTS - The James Shivnan Cup competition was played on Sunday the 26th of June and this year's winner was Brian Furey with 41 points, 2nd Mark O’Donohoe 40, 3rd Jim Suffin 40, Gross Brendan Gaffney 40.

Brian Furey continued his great week by winning the Mens’ 12 hole held on Thursday the 1st of July with a fantastic score of 33 points, 2nd Adam Daly 30, 3rd Gerry Nerney 29. The winner of the 2s club was Pat Conroy.

Sunday the 4th of July played host to the PGA Tankard. Update 27th June

FIXTURES- The PGA Tankard competition for the men will be on Sunday the 4th of June, and the first of this year's majors, Mens’ President Padraic O’Connells prize will be on Sunday the 11th of June. Sunday the 18th of July is the date for this years Bart Moran Cup for the men and the Niamh Nangle Cup for the women.

RESULTS - The James Shivnan Cup competition was played on Sunday the 26th of June. Results are delayed due to an issue with the computer touchscreen. A new one has been ordered and should arrive in the next week.

The Drumderrig Cup was played for on the 20th of June by the ladies and men’s sections. The winner was Charlie O’Donnell 64 nett, 2nd Marie Hanmore-Cawley 65, 3rd Paul Brown 66. Gross Karl Keenan.

In the Mens’ 12 hole held on Thursday the 24th the winner on count back with28 points was Adam Daly, with Tadhg Lowe taking 2nd place with the same score and Kevin O’Connor came 3rd. The winner of the 2s club was Paul Connolly.

INTERCLUBS - The first round victory of John McGuinn’s All Ireland Fourball team’s on Tuesday meant that Boyle knocked the big guns of Rosses Point out of 2 competitions in the space of 4 days. This match was a tighter affair ; by 9 o’clock that evening each side had won 2 games apiece so all was dependent on the final game in Boyle. Shane O’Dowd and Pat Brogan were all square with their opposites after 18 holes, so it was to be a “sudden death” finish, with the next pairing to win a hole deciding both the game and overall match outright. They each halved the 19,20th and 21st holes before Boyle finally won this game and the overall match on the 22nd. Congratulations again to all. Both our Pierce Purcell and All Ireland Fourball teams now take on Strandhill in their respective second rounds.

Paddy McLoughlin’s Seniors’ team came extremely close to making it 3 out of 3 for Boyle against Rosses Point in 1 week, but the “sudden death” finish went against Boyle this time, with the deciding game being won by Rosses Point on the 19th hole on their home turf. It could not have been any closer, but it was great to see a good performance in a grade the club has traditionally been weak in.

CLUB DRAW - Winners of the club draw in July were - 1st Paddy McLoughlin, 2nd Jonathan Egan, 3rd Frank Flanagan.

1st place gets 120 euro, 2nd and 3rd 60 apiece. Entry envelopes are available at the clubhouse noticeboard or you can set up a direct debit for 10 euro per month to the clubs bank account at the following IBAN : IE59  BOFI 905328 22439700.

FIXTURES- The James Shivnan Cup takes place on Sunday the 27th of June, the PGA Tankard will be on Sunday the 4th of June, and the first of this year's majors, Mens’ President Padraic O’Connell’s prize will be on Sunday the 11th of June.

RESULTS - Congratulations to Gerry Carty who beat Vincent Egan in the final of the 2020 King Harmon Cup competition.

The Drumderrig Cup 18 hole Stroke competition was played on Sunday the 20th of June, with results to follow during the week.

Pat Conroy was the winner of this year's King Cup competition played on Sunday the 13th of June, with a tremendous 45 points. An in-form Marc O’Connor took 2nd place with 42 points, David Wynne claimed the prize for the best gross score. Jim Callery played some fine golf to have a score of 41 points and took 3rd place.

In the Men's weekly 12 hole played on Thursday the 10th of June, Adam Daly was first with 30 points, 2nd Pat Conroy 28, 3rd John McGuinn 26. Martin Daly won the 2s club. The competition on the 17th of June was won by Gerry Nerney’s 27 points, 2nd Paddy McLoughlin 26, 3rd Mark Feehan 24.

INTERCLUBS - Liam Whyte’s Pierce Purcell team claimed a major scalp in the first round of this year's competition, knocking out Co Sligo Golf Club (Rosses Point), who have won the All Ireland final of this tournament on several occasions. The win was achieved despite Boyle having the disadvantage of 3 matches in Rosses Point and 2 in Boyle. Charlie O’Donnell and Gerry Carty won their match on the 17th in Boyle, Liam Whyte and Sean Heslin had a tighter game, not overcoming their opposites until the 20th. Word came through from the Point that Boyle had won 2 matches there - Brendan Gaffney and Paul Connolly winning 3 holes up with 2 to play, and first-time interclub players Lochlann Conboy and Lee McKillen trouncing their opposites, 5 holes up with 4 to play. Boyle’s 3rd pairing of David Gallagher and Jim Suffin were called in at this point as the match had been won, they were level with their opposites on the 14th so Boyle could well have won this match as well. Congratulations to all. Our Pierce Purcell team now take on Strandhill in the second round in 2 weeks.

This week we wish good luck to John McGuinns All Ireland Fourball team vs Rosses Point this Wednesday the 23rd, and Paddy McLoughlins Seniors in the Fred Perry Cup (yet again vs Rosses Point) the following day, Thursday the 24th. Members are welcome to come up and support the teams in these matches. Sent from my iPhone

RESULTS - The golfing year had its traditional start somewhat later than usual when the Captains Drive In event took place on Sunday the 23rd of May.  Captain Jonathan Egan hit the traditional drive up the first which was circulated on video due to the ongoing restrictions on gatherings. The 18 hole Stableford competition that took place on Sunday the 17/5 was won by Gerry Nerney with 40 points, John McGuinn claimed 2nd place with 38, the prize for best gross score went to Terry Bright and Tommy King came 3rd with 38 points.

GOLF RULE RE ABNORMAL COURSE CONDITIONS - There are a number of piles of cut branches on the peripheries of the playing areas of the course which may occasionally interfere with play. KING HARMON CUP - The marathon campaign that was 2020 King Harmon Cup match play tournament is almost at a close, a full 9 months after it started. Vincent Egan and Gerry Carty are the last men standing, having been victorious in their respective semi-finals, and will do battle in the final shortly. The King Harmon Cup has been played for in the club since the early 1930s.

BAR - The clubhouse and bar facilities remain closed in adherence to the NPHET guidelines. The next loosening of restrictions of note takes place on Monday the 7th of June when licensed premises are allowed to sell alcohol for consumption outdoors. Whilst the club would very much like to facilitate this, it may prove difficult with current resources. If members are willing to give of their time and skills to get the bar open in a manner that complies with the rules, please contact House Convenor, Vincent Egan. If it is felt that we cannot comply with the guidelines on 7/6/21, the bar may have to stay shut until full indoor service is allowed.

FIXTURES - A full fixtures list for the remainder of 2021 will be published during the coming week. Next Sunday, the 23rd of May sees the “Captain’s Drive-in”, which has always been our traditional start to the golfing year. As we are still not permitted to hold large get-togethers, for this year we will have to forego the traditional bloodsport of all crowding around a nervous Captain trying not to make a hames of the ceremonial drive up the 1st fairway. The Captain would like to reassure members that you will have ample opportunity to see exactly how bad a golfer he is later in the year. The format of the competition will be an 18 hole Stableford.

The following Sunday, the 30th of May is the date for this year's Voucher competition. This is the most lucrative prize of the year, as the winner gets their membership fee handed back to them, up to the value of full single membership. To be eligible to win, you must have your membership paid up to date for 2021.

The Holmpatrick Cup takes place on Sunday the 3rd of June.

The quarter-final results are as follows - Gerry Carty beat Michael McHale, Lorcan Egan beat Jason Beirne, Lochlainn Conboy was beaten by Vincent Egan. Padraig O’Connell and Martin Daly’s match will be played when the restrictions are relaxed to a degree that permits golf to resume.

1st place gets 120 euro, 2nd and 3rd 60 apiece. Entry envelopes are available at the clubhouse noticeboard or you can set up a direct debit for 10 euro per month to the club's bank account at the following IBAN : IE59  BOFI 905328 22439700.

AGM.  The AGM of the men's club took place on Sunday the 17th of January at 5 pm.
Due to the ongoing Level 5 restrictions, the meeting took place online via “Zoom”, with a link to participate in the meeting sent out to male members during the week prior to the AGM. The 2021 men’s committee was ratified at the meeting. Notable points from the meeting included that the increase in the men’s membership during the year led to a healthier than expected revenue from the men's competitions. It is hoped to have the overall Club AGM on Sunday the 14th of February. As the current restrictions are very unlikely to have relaxed to a degree permitting large indoor gatherings, it is expected that this meeting will also take place via “Zoom”.

PHOTO - Cormac Boydell from Cork sent the attached photo to us during the week. It shows a gathering of Boyle Golf Club members outside the clubhouse pavilion in 1913, some with their clubs beside them. This picture appears to have been taken at the club's previous location on the Warren side of the town where “The Warren” housing estate is currently located. Cormac’s grandmother Gladys Jameson originated from Abbeytown. We wish to thank Cormac for forwarding us this piece of the club's history from before World War 1.
