Update 22nd July

CAPTAIN'S PRIZE - Seamus Gallagher’s Captain’s Prize takes place next Sunday, the 28th of July. The format is the traditional 18 hole Strokeplay, with the best scores qualifying for a 9 hole play-off later that evening, with presentation of prizes afterwards. There is often debate within golf clubs as to which prizes are considered “majors”, but there is no such doubt about the Captain's Prize- it is undisputedly the most prestigious competition of the year for the men of the club. There will also be a Scramble on Friday evening, where the emphasis will be very much on the “social” aspect of golf rather than the competitive. Please note that to be eligible to take first place in the Captain’s Prize you must have played three 18 hole qualifier competitions in Boyle this year.

The Captain's Prize to the Ladies was played on Sunday the 21st July. The winning tally was the 70 nett returned by Kathleen Candon, which was a great score on a day of continuous wind and rain. Regina McLoughlin took second place. Mary O’Hara had the best gross score and Joey Mullaney was third. The prizes for this competition will be presented at the main Captain's Prize presentation on Sunday the 28th.

INTERCLUBS - Commiserations to our Mixed Foursomes team who made it all the way to the “finals weekend” of the Connacht Mixed Foursomes tournament, an achievement in itself for a small club such as ours. They were beaten by Athlone Golf Club, who were the eventual winners on the weekend. Congratulations to Athlone.

Update 23rd June

Participants and mentors from Boyle Golf Club Ladies "Get into Golf" programme)

RESULTS -  Below are a number of results from competitions in recent weeks which were held over due to pressure of space. Lochlainn Conboy appears to be the man to watch at the moment. It is also good to see Michael McHale back in the winners enclosure after a spell away from the game.
The winners of the Crumlin Classic played were the team of Michael McHale, Lochlainn Conboy and Charlie O'Donnell, with Paddy Nangle ,Karl Keenan and Gerry Carty taking second place. Third place went to Gerry O'Hara, Ross Andrew and Charlie O'Donnell.
The 18 hole stableford played on the weekend of the 16th of June had a very unusual outcome with the top 6 players all having 41 points. On countback the winner was Adrian King , second was Ciaran Beirne, Paul Connolly took the prize for best gross score and Lochlainn Conboy came third.
The 12 hole competition played on the 13th of June was won by Ross Andrew with a superb tally of 32 points for the 12 holes. The runner up was Michael Rush with 28 points, and Michael Reid came third with 27 points, just edging out Kevin O'Connor on countback. Owen Garvin was the sole winner of the 2s club.
The following Thursdays 12 hole competition was won by Lochlainn Conboy with 29 points, followed by Padraig O'Connell on 28 and Paul Connolly came 3rd with 27. The 2s club rolls over to next week.

INTERCLUB - Huge congratulations to our Mixed Foursomes team who have made it to a Connacht Final having had a nail bitingly close finish in the semi-final against Ballina Golf Club. The tie lay in the balance with all other matches having concluded when Peggy Feely and Lorcan Egan being all square with their opponents after 18 holes had to go up the 19th for a "sudden death" play off from which they emerged victorious. The team now face Athlone Golf Club in the Connacht Final, which is a significant achievement for a small club such as Boyle.
Our mens' Pierce Purcell team had done very well to reach a zone final but were unfortunately beaten by Ballina Golf Club despite Darragh Loftus and Joe Hussey recording a good win away in Ballina. Unfortunately other results did not go Boyle's way. We wish Ballina the best of luck in the remainder of the tournament.

JUNIORS - Junior golf lessons have resumed from 11-1 on Saturdays. Equipment is not necessary but feel free to bring any you may have.

OPEN WEEK - One of the most enjoyable times of the year in our club is "Open Week" with competitions on everyday from Monday the 1st of July to Friday the 5th. Monday sees the course hosting Ladies and Gents 9 hole strokeplay competitions, Tuesday is our Ladies Gala Day , played as an 18 hole stableford, with a Gents 9 hole stableford played on the same day. The main competition on the Wednesday will be an 18 hole Scotch Mixed Foursomes and there will also be Ladies and Gents 9 hole stableford competitions. Thursday will play host to the main mens' competition of the week, an 18 hole strokeplay competition, and a Ladies 9 hole stableford will be the other fixture of the day. The week finishes on the Friday with a team event , played this year as a 3 ball scramble with a social barbecue afterwards. The club owe a huge debt of gratitude to our generous local business community who always come up trumps with sponsorship of prizes for our Open Week. Please take note of their advertising at the club and try and support all who contribute.

GET INTO GOLF PROGRAMME - Well done to all the ladies who took part on this programme in recent weeks as newcomers to the game of golf. This was a huge success, the club was absolutely delighted with the large numbers participating and we hope to see all involved continue their interest on the game.

PRESIDENT'S PRIZE - It had looked very doubtful during the week whether the President's Prize would be played this weekend at all, given the uncertainty about the the conditions after recent unseasonal rainfall. Thankfully it proceeded as planned and conditions turned out to be more benign overhead than underfoot for most of the day. It turned out to be a battle of the low handicappers with Brendan Gaffney just pipping Patrick Egan into 2nd. It was fortunate for Brendan that he came first in the Presidents Prize as his wife Susan had claimed 1st in the respective ladies event. Paul Brown took 3rd in his first “major” and Lorcan Egan won the prize for best gross score.
