Update 12th September

GOLFER OF THE YEAR - Following a recent review of the Golfer of the Year competition it was discovered that points had erroneously been awarded on both the Saturday and Sunday of weekend competitions instead of aggregated overall places. RESULTS - Thursday Competitions -

Update 25th July

INTERCLUBS - Boyle had a notable victory over Enniscrone GC in the first round of the Jack O'Sullivan Tournament. The win was a particularly sweet one for first time team captain Shane O'Dowd as Boyle had some significant disadvantages, including the club being drawn to play 3 of the 5 matches on Enniscrone's course, but also the refusal of Enniscrone to allow the match to be played at a weekend. Boyle GC has a significantly lower playing population than Enniscrone so we knew that playing on a weekday would disproportionately affect our ability to fulfil the fixture. We were still seeking our 10th player on the day of the match when Mark Whelan stepped in. In the games in Boyle, Vincent Egan and Lorcan Egan won their game, and word came back that we had lost 1 of the 3 Enniscrone games but in the 2nd of the Enniscrone ties Shane O'Dowd and Karl Keenan pulled off the most vital result of the day beating their opposite numbers from Enniscrone on the 14th hole of their own course. Back in Boyle, Martin Wynne and Mark Whelan were 3 holes down early on in their match but overturned this deficit to win the deciding game of the match. Away wins against Enniscrone are a real rarity so this was a very satisfying one for Boyle. Best of luck to Shane and the team in the next round.

RESULTS  - Mark Feehan carried some of his recent Thursday night form through to the competition played on Saturday and Sunday the 16/17th of July, winning the 18 Hole Stroke competition with a 61 nett. Adam Daly was 2nd with 64, Lorcan Egan had the best gross and Kevin O'Connor came 3rd with 66 nett.

PRACTICE NETS - The practice nets are closed until further notice. Thanks for your cooperation.

REDUCED GREEN FEES FOR CHILDREN - We have a very competitive membership rate for under 18s at 60 euro for a full year. Our usual green fee for a round for a non member is 15 euro, but we are offering  a special reduced green fee for under 18s on Mondays of just 5 euro. This rate will apply on Mondays for June, July and August. We hope this will allow some children and teenagers try out the game and see if they enjoy it without having to commit to a Junior Membership first. Just sign the Green Fee book in the front hall of the clubhouse and place the green fee in an envelope in the letterbox beside the inner door. Under 18s must be supervised by an adult.

Update 20th June

INTERCLUBS - Well done to our Mens Pierce Purcell tournament team who had a very solid win over Ballinamore Golf Club on Saturday the 18th. Boyle were up against it, having 3 matches away in Ballinamore and just 2 at home. The pairings of Lee McKillen with Conor Hamill  and Liam Whyte with Jason Beirne had 2 good wins at home in Boyle and the match went in Boyles favour when word came back that Lochlainn Conboy and Michael McHale had won their game in Ballinamore. The 2 other away pairings for Boyle were Terry Canning with Gerry Carty and Tadhg Lowe with Pat Brogan. Well done to joint captains Liam Whyte and Brendan Gaffney and good luck in the next round.

Hard luck to our ladies team who had a narrow defeat to Carrick On Shannon in the Minor Cup the same day. Mary O'Hara won her game and Aisling Gaughran and Susan O'Mahoney managed to bring their matches to sudden death play-offs, being level after 18, but luck wasn't with us. Best of luck to Carrick on Shannon in the next round.

Update 23rd May

LADIES INTERCLUBS - It was great to see  a ladies interclub team back in action this week in the Junior Foursomes tournament. They put in a respectable performance but were beaten by a very competitive team from Roscommon Golf Club. The team were - Liz Dwyer and Moira Egan, Mary O'Hara and Susan O'Mahoney, and Regina McLoughlin and Aisling Gaughran.

MENS INTERCLUB SENIORS - Well done to Michael Simon's Seniors' team who had an impressive win against Co Sligo Golf Club (Rosses Point) last Friday evening. This is a category that the club has struggled to win any matches in at all for a long number of years so to take a comprehensive win against a club with the reputation of Rosses Point was a real boost. In Boyle Vincent Egan and Ross Andrew won on the 16th, as did Pat Conroy and Kevin O'Connor (particular congratulations to Kevin who was making his interclub debut), with Michael McHale and Gerry Carty making it a clean sweep of the home matches winning their one on the 18th. The 2 away pairings in Rosses Point of Brendan Gaffney with Pat Brogan and Paddy McLoughlin with Charlie O'Donnell were both called in off the course leading their matches as the result had already been sealed by the 3 wins in Boyle. Best of luck to Michael and co in the next round.

MENS INTERCLUB ALL IRELAND FOURBALL - Hard luck to our Mens' All Ireland Fourball team who were beaten by Ballina Golf Club on Saturday.  Boyle were always going to the underdogs in this fixture playing a much larger club and with the split being 3 matches in Ballina and 2 in Boyle. Boyle battled valiantly though and in the 2 matches in Ballina fought hard to be  level after 18 holes in both and brought one match to a sudden death play off on the 20th and the other similarly to the 19th, but it wasn't our day. Well done to all who played in the 2 rounds and special thanks to Brendan Gaffney for managing the team.

RESULTS -

PGA TANKARD - The men competed in the  PGA Tankard competition on the weekend of the 14th/15th May. 1st Pat Brogan 42 points, 2nd Kevin O'Connor 40, 3rd Lochlainn Conboy 39.

19/5/22 1st Lorcan Egan 26 points, 2nd Dessie Murphy 24, 3rd Michael Simon 25. James O'Dowd won the 2s club.

SOCIAL SCRAMBLE - The winning team in the Friday night Scramble held on 13/5/22 were Lorcan Egan, Pat Conroy and Bernie Kemple. Well done again to Bernie who will be trying for 3 in a row at the next Scramble on the 27th. Names to be in for draw at 6, shotgun start tee off at 6.30.

CONDOLENCES - The club bade farewell this week to Mary Ryan and Martin Higgins.

Mary and her husband Paddy were heavily involved in the activities and life of the club for many years, both having served as Captains and Paddy as club President, with Mary's year as Lady Captain occurring in 1980. Mary was known as a very talented golfer and played on numerous interclub teams. Mary also made valuable contributions to several other community organisations especially Boyle Musical Society but also with fundraising for the local hospice.

Martin Higgins was involved in the club throughout his long life, first playing as a young man and still playing regularly until his early 80s. Martin was Captain in 1978 and Mens' President in 1992, but contributed in several other voluntary capacities in the club before and after those years. Martin and his late wife Marie are particularly fondly remembered for running the catering in the club during the 1990s. The club was privileged to host a Scramble and social event just a few weeks ago to mark Martin's 90th birthday.

The club offers sincere condolences to the families and friends of both Mary and Martin.
